The 30-item PG packing checklist you'll actually use
Every year, thousands of students walk into their first PG carrying half of what they need and twice of what they don't. This is the shortcut list — sorted by priority, tested by our wardens.
**The absolute essentials (day one)** Bedsheet, pillow cover, a thin cotton blanket, two towels, a padlock for your cupboard, a plastic mug, a bucket if your PG doesn't provide one, and a bottle of hand-wash. That covers your first 24 hours, no exceptions.
**The week-two upgrades** A study lamp with USB port, a small power strip (Indian hostels are wonderfully unpredictable about socket placement), noise-cancelling earplugs, and a single foldable clothes-drying stand for your balcony. These four alone will lift your comfort by 40%.
**The little things that make it home** A photo you can pin, one favourite ceramic mug, a nightlight, and if you're a tea drinker — a plug-in kettle. Rules vary, so ask your warden. Most PGs are more permissive than students assume.
**What to leave behind** Heavy suitcases (buy a folding one), that extra pair of shoes you're 'sure you'll wear', and expensive electronics beyond your phone + laptop. Insurance is cheap; heartbreak is not.
**The best money you'll spend all year** ₹80 on a decent slim padlock. Every PG we've walked through has stories about the cupboard that was 'just fine' — until it wasn't.
