Choosing a Pulse Oximeter: Home Use vs. Clinical Use — What Actually Matters
The AED 25 oximeter on Amazon looks identical to the AED 55 clinical model. It is not. Here is what the internal certification lists reveal — and when the cheap one is actually fine.
We import pulse oximeters at three different price points. All of them display an SpO₂ number. That is where the similarities end.
The distinguishing question is 'what tolerance does the reading carry?' For a healthy adult monitoring recovery at home, ±2% is fine. For a paediatric case, a post-COVID patient with lingering desaturation, or any clinical decision, ±2% is not fine.
Certifications that matter. ISO 80601-2-61 is the international standard for pulse oximeters. CE marking is not enough on its own — CE just means the product met the low-voltage directive. Look for the ISO number printed on the box.
Perfusion index (PI) display. A screen that shows only SpO₂ is a consumer product. A screen that also shows the perfusion index tells you how reliable the current reading is. If PI is below 0.4, the value is probably wrong.
Motion tolerance. Cheap oximeters throw wild readings on any finger tremor. Clinical models filter motion artefacts. If you're using it on children or elderly hands, motion tolerance matters more than the headline SpO₂ accuracy.
Battery. AAA batteries are fine. Rechargeable oximeters with USB-C ports are handy for busy clinics — check that the battery is user-replaceable, not sealed.
Our recommendation. For home use with generally-healthy adults, our AED 45 model is more than enough. For clinics, dental, and any paediatric use, spend the extra AED 20 for the model with PI display and ISO 80601 marking. Message us on WhatsApp for the current in-stock list.
